How to Read the BRVM Composite Index Like an Analyst

Published September 8, 2026

The BRVM Composite is concentrated, thinly traded and dominated by a handful of stocks. Here is how to read it without drawing false conclusions.

The BRVM Composite is the headline index of the Regional Stock Exchange (UEMOA). It tracks the performance of listed companies across eight West African countries. But unlike the S&P 500, the BRVM is highly concentrated: a few banks and telecom stocks drive most of the daily movement.

Before interpreting a daily rise or fall, always check traded volume. A 2% move on very low volume is not the same signal as a 2% move on strong volume. Also compare the index level against its 20-day and 50-day moving averages to see if the trend is genuinely shifting or just noise.

Finally, look at sector breadth. If only one or two large caps are up while the rest of the market is flat, the "market" is not really rallying — it is just a couple of stocks moving.
